According to Prof Francis Petersen, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, in an introduction to the inaugural lecture delivered by Prof Jonathan Okeke Chimakonam titled The Communal Contract and the Real African Predicament: Colonialysis, Communalysis and the Danger of the Post-Community, “inaugural lecture is one of the most cherished traditions in the life of a university. It marks not only the cumulation of years of dedicated scholarship but also a moment of reflection and dialogue with the broader society” (2025). Therefore, inaugural lecture is an academic rite that provides an inaugural lecturer a platform to display what he or she has been doing in the academe and the contribution he or she has made to knowledge in his or her field of research. It is a prestigious and
elaborate academic ceremony which helps to reposition a university for global visibility. I hope this lecture will be beneficial to everyone present here and contribute to the transformation of our local communities in terms of theatre and film matters in the Niger Delta region in particular and Nigeria generally.
